Beauty that comes
from within.

Kalon is a word with no English equivalent. It means both “good” and “beautiful” at the same time. The philosophers of Ancient Greece used the word to describe the ideal of physical and moral beauty. But in today’s world, it is commonly used to suggest a type of beauty that is more than skin deep. Beauty that comes from within.

Carla Aloisio doesn’t remember when she first heard the word. But she knew that kalon was the term that perfectly summed up something that she had been thinking about since she was a teenager; that true beauty is invariably the outward expression of what’s inside. Following her dream of becoming a hairdresser, Carla came to realise that the physical appearance of a person’s hair and skin had more to do with things like their lifestyle, the environment and their self-image than anything else.

It was yoga that got her thinking like that.

As her own personal growth led her to take a more holistic approach to her life, Carla began to question the excessive use of chemicals and other harmful substances being widely used in the hairdressing industry. It was obvious that the hair and scalp problems she saw in her clients were being aggravated by the chemical ingredients that were widely used in hair products. Furthermore, most of the manufacturers were multinationals with questionable ethics surrounding animal testing, wasteful packaging and environmental impact.

Hairdressing was not a healthy industry. For more than a decade, Carla has dedicated herself to challenging and reimagining the traditional hairdressing business model. Her salon doubles as a yoga studio for staff and customers and there are regular yoga retreats. All-natural, chemical-free products have replaced mainstream products. And she has partnered with SustainableSalons.org in their mission to make salon waste history with packaging repurposing and recycling, and hair clipping collection. The discovery of the Italian hair care brand Davines while travelling through Europe was another turning point for Carla and her mission to recreate her hair salon as a hub of wellness and sustainability. A business that elevates the goodness and beauty in everyone.
